The pearl, also known as the sea jewel, is the birthstone for June
June’s birthstone is pearl, doesn’t that make Geminis lucky? Pearls are a unique jewel that is often called the ‘Queen of Gems’. They are the only gemstone formed under the sea and can come in different shapes, colors, and sizes. They symbolise purity and generosity, and are associated with wisdom acquired over time. It’s traditional for brides to wear pearl jewelry, and they are often given as graduation gifts.
What is the process of forming pearls?
Fun fact; pearls are created inside oysters and mussels, a foreign substance slips into the oyster between the mantle and the shell which irritate the mantle, it’s kind of like the oyster getting a splinter. A pearl develops from a small speck of sand to a beautiful gemstone.
Natural pearls come in two forms: saltwater and freshwater. There are also cultured pearls, these are still authentic, however, humans assist in the process by implanting the splinter (a small bead or a piece of mantle tissue) into the oyster causing the pearl sac to form and eventually a pearl is created.
Totally On Trend
Modern designs throughout the spring/summer catwalks are incorporating pearls again. From delicate pearl hoops to ear cuffs, classic pearl jewelry pieces received an innovative update for spring. Adding a fresh and unique feel, pearls were styled on models such as Gigi and Bella Hadid.
Caring For Your Pearls
To prevent scratches, pearl jewelry should be stored separately, wrapped in soft material, away from other metal jewelry. As they’re porous, they must not be immersed in water or cleaning products. Contact with perfume, hairspray, and body cream may cause discoloration. To avoid damage, always put your pearl jewelry on last when dressing. Use a soft cloth to clean pearls and use special pearl cleaning solutions if needed.
