IWC Eternal Calendar
IWC is joining rarified air this year with the brand’s first secular perpetual calendar. This hyper-accurate calendar caliber has only been designed four times in the past. The calendar will adjust for the skipped leap years at the start of each century until 2400 when the leap year will happen. Unlike a perpetual calendar that will need a correction in 2100, the Eternal Calendar is fitted with a 400-year gear that overrides the Gregorian calendar’s complex leap year rule exceptions and skips three leap years over four centuries. In short, it will not need to be adjusted until 3999!
Maybe more impressive is that they’ve absolutely shattered the record for moonphase accuracy with a new display accurate for 45,000,000 years. And they’ve done it in essentially the same case dimensions as the other new Portugieser Perpetual Calendars that we’ll dive into later in this newsletter.
IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar
As if the Eternal Calendar wasn’t enough of a feat, IWC Schaffhausen has also undertaken a comprehensive reworking and refinement of one of its most iconic models, the Portugieser collection. At Watches and Wonders, four new versions were unveiled: two in white gold with blue and sand-colored dials and two in Armor Gold with black and silver dials. And there’s more to them than just new colors.
The updated and refined 44.4mm (up by 0.2mm) case of the new IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar now features a slimmer middle band and a more slender profile yet maintains a height of 14.9mm. Enhancing its elegance are glass-box-type sapphire crystals on both the front and back of the watch, contributing to a reduction in overall weight. Notably, the water resistance has been enhanced, reaching 50m compared to the previous 30m.
The weekday subdial is positioned at 9 o’clock, incorporating the running seconds, while the date subdial shares space with the power reserve indicator at 3 o’clock. At 6 o’clock, the month subdial is featured, with the year indicator to its left. Completing the calendar features is the signature Double Moon display at 12 o’clock. All the displays are perfectly synchronized and are set via the crown, all thanks to Kurt Klaus’s ingenious invention.
Considerable attention has also been lavished on the dials. The representations have undergone revisions, and the dials of the new Portugieser Perpetual Calendar references have been painstakingly crafted with 15 layers of transparent lacquer, finely ground and polished to achieve a glossy effect. The calendar subdials are intricately milled into the brass base and the lacquer layer.
The new IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar timepieces come in various iterations: white gold case with Horizon blue dials featuring rhodium-plated hands and indices, white gold case with Dune-colored dials adorned with gold-plated hands and gold indices, and Armor Gold-cased watches with Obsidian black and silver-plated dials, all complemented by gold-plated hands and hour markers.
More Models In New Colors
But IWC didn’t stop there with their new colors! An iconic, timeless collection that bears many of its ancestor’s traits, the Portugieser collection now holds chronograph and automatic timepieces in Horizon, Obsidian, and Dune colorways. While the Horizon collection is limited to boutiques, the other pieces will be available soon at Shiva’s.
IWC Portugieser Automatic 42
This year was clearly all about the Portugieser for IWC, a collection that has evolved into one of the brand’s evergreens, known for its style and refinement. But in the case of the simpler Portugieser, there’s plenty to be discovered with the new IWC Portugieser Automatic 42mm editions.
IWC introduced a slightly improved movement for the new IW5017 sub-collection, known as calibre IW 50211. This in-house automatic movement, running at a rate of 28,800vph, still boasts a 168-hour or 7-day power reserve but is better protected against magnetic fields over the outgoing IW 52010 movement. Its Pellaton winding system is also equipped with virtually wear-free zirconium oxide ceramic components.
All the timepieces mentioned in today’s newsletter – as well as the many more to come – are always available only at Shiva’s. Get in touch with us today for help with any inquiries.
